The Georgia Public Service Commission voted unanimously in July 2026 to review how Georgia Power charges data centers for electricity, Atlanta News First reported on July 10. On July 9, commission staff opened Docket No. 57171 and sent Georgia Power questions it must answer under oath about how it calculates its real-time pricing rate for large customers and whether that rate covers their costs. Initial responses were due August 10, and the review is expected to run through the end of the year. Commissioner Peter Hubbard asked whether data centers are paying their fair share. Georgia Power supports the review and says large-load revenue allowed it to freeze base rates through 2028.
The same week, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division issued notices of violation to power plant developer VoltaGrid and data center developer ServerFarm over construction that began before air permits were issued at a project in Covington.
For Georgia businesses, this matters in two ways. First, it affects electricity costs for everyone on Georgia Power's system, including companies that run their own server rooms. Second, power is the main constraint on data center growth in the Atlanta market, which affects the colocation options and pricing available to local buyers. If you are evaluating colocation in Georgia, ask providers how much of their capacity has contracted utility power today versus what is still planned, and how utility rate changes pass through to your monthly power charges.
Watch for the review's findings later this year, along with Georgia Power's quarterly large-load reports to the PSC.
