Microsoft Agent 365 became generally available on May 1, 2026, at $15 per user per month. Microsoft describes it as a control plane for AI agents: it gives each agent its own Microsoft Entra Agent ID for identity and access management and lets administrators see and manage agents from the Microsoft 365 admin center. The license is assigned to a human user, and agents acting on that user's behalf are covered without their own license. Agent 365 is also included in the new Microsoft 365 E7 suite.
As employees build agents in Copilot Studio and other tools, businesses face a new inventory problem: software that can read data and take actions, often created outside IT. Microsoft said it has mapped more than 500,000 agents internally, and that tens of millions of agents were registered in the Agent 365 registry during the preview. Agents with broad access and no clear owner create the same risks as unmanaged user accounts.
Whether or not you buy Agent 365, the governance questions are the same. Ask your IT provider how many agents and automations already exist in your Microsoft 365 tenant, who created them, and what data they can reach. Set a rule that every agent has a named owner and the minimum access it needs, and review the list on a schedule. If you are evaluating Agent 365, confirm which users actually need a license, since the per-user price adds up quickly.
According to Licensing School, agents acting for a licensed user do not need their own E7 license either.
