Microsoft Azure Hit by Authentication Errors and Multi-Service Outages in June

Azure had a rough June. On June 15, a subset of Azure services began throwing 401 authentication errors — meaning applications and users were locked out despite having valid credentials. That followed a late-May multi-region disruption tied to a software rollout issue in Azure's AI infrastructure that cascaded into widespread service instability across multiple regions. If your business depends on Azure-hosted applications, Microsoft 365, or any cloud services that authenticate through Azure Active Directory, outages like this are a wake-up call to have a plan. Microsoft's own post-incident guidance acknowledges that large first-party AI workloads sharing routing infrastructure with regular multi-tenant business traffic creates risk. They are working to separate those out, but that work is not complete. The practical takeaway: do not rely on Azure's own monitoring tools to tell you Azure is down — by definition, they may also be down. Set up an independent external monitor for your critical cloud dependencies, and have a documented short-term fallback procedure for your most business-critical workflows when cloud services are unavailable.
