On September 28, 2026, Fierce Network reported on an Ookla analysis by lead industry analyst Mike Dano that named seven regional fiber providers as possible acquisition targets: Allo Fiber, Gateway Fiber, LiveOak Fiber, Wire 3, Ripple Fiber, Intrepid Fiber and Ezee Fiber. Dano noted that roughly 40% of the U.S. fiber market is still served by hundreds of small providers, and that operators in affluent markets, operators that are the sole provider in their area, or those with aggressive expansion plans are the most attractive. He was clear the list is not a prediction, and that scale, ownership structure and regulatory hurdles can stop deals.
The list lands in an active year. Fierce's tracker counts T-Mobile stakes in GoNetspeed, Greenlight Networks and i3 Broadband, the GFiber and Astound merger, TDS buying Granite State Communications, and Omni Fiber acquiring Citizens Fiber. LiveOak Fiber serves Georgia, Florida and South Carolina, so Southeast businesses are directly in the mix.
For a business, a change of owner on your fiber circuit usually means new contracts, new billing systems, a new support desk and sometimes new pricing at renewal. If your primary or backup internet comes from a smaller regional fiber provider, pull your current agreement and note the term end date, assignment language and any price-protection terms. Ask your provider whether support and escalation contacts will change in a sale, and keep a diverse second circuit from a different carrier so an ownership transition never becomes an outage.
Consolidation is not automatically bad for customers; larger owners can bring more capital and coverage. The practical point is to know your contract terms before someone else's deal changes them.
