Reports from The Information on October 13 indicate OpenAI is in early talks to acquire Trail of Bits, a New York-based security firm with about 40 employees that specializes in finding and patching vulnerabilities in open-source software. The two companies have already been working together since June on a program called Patch the Planet, which used OpenAI's models alongside Trail of Bits engineers to identify hundreds of bugs in widely used open-source libraries. No deal terms have been confirmed and talks are preliminary. The news still rattled the established security vendors: Palo Alto Networks dropped 4 percent on the news, with CrowdStrike and Fortinet also slipping. The market read this as OpenAI potentially moving from a supplier to a competitor in enterprise cybersecurity — selling security tools directly rather than just powering other vendors' products. For business owners, nothing changes today. But if OpenAI does get into cybersecurity services, it would be another major shakeup in a vendor landscape that's already consolidating fast.
