The Department of Veterans Affairs completed its 2026 electronic health record deployment goal on October 24, going live with the Oracle Health EHR at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center and the Alaska VA Healthcare System in Anchorage, along with 16 associated clinics in Ohio and Alaska. The two go-lives migrated more than 163,000 veterans and 7,800 facility staff to the new system, bringing the total to more than 780,000 veterans and 42,000 clinicians and staff nationwide using the platform.
The 2026 pace — 13 hospitals in a single year — marks a notable acceleration from the nearly three-year deployment pause that ended earlier this year. VA credited the progress to standardizing the system, consolidating decision-making, and hiring additional rollout staff. The Oracle Health contract was expanded in August to a $27 billion ceiling and extended through May 2031, although a separate independent estimate has placed the full lifecycle cost at $49.8 billion. VA's full deployment target remains 170 sites, with 26 hospitals planned for 2027.
For healthcare IT directors at organizations that interact with the VA — through community care referrals, data sharing agreements, or shared patients — it is a good time to confirm that interface configurations and health information exchange connections are current, as each new VA site go-live can alter how records are routed and shared with outside providers.
