Ideal Customer

  • Epic's core sweet spot is large enterprise healthcare organizations: academic medical centers, integrated delivery networks (IDNs) of 5–50+ hospitals, large health systems with 200+ beds, and children's hospitals requiring deep specialty modules across oncology (Beacon), transplant (Phoenix), OR (OpTime), and ambulatory care.
  • Implementation costs for mid-size community hospitals run $50M–$150M, while large academic medical centers routinely exceed $300M, making Epic impractical for small independent practices without access to Epic's Community Connect program — a shared-access model targeting hospitals under 250 beds and clinics under 100 providers that join a larger health system's existing Epic instance.

Key Differentiators

  • Epic's primary differentiator is the depth and breadth of its single unified clinical record — one integrated platform spanning inpatient, ambulatory, behavioral health, home health, and post-acute care, with 100% of U.S. Epic health systems interoperable and exchanging 9 billion records per year.
  • Epic has won the KLAS Best in KLAS Overall Health System Suite award for 16 consecutive years (2026), scoring 89.7/100 in large acute care EHR, and is the only EHR vendor to have gained hospitals every year in recent history while competitors like Oracle Health lost ground.

Industries Served

  • Epic Systems exclusively serves the healthcare industry, with no meaningful presence in financial services, legal, education, government IT, or retail.
  • Within healthcare, its platform supports a broad spectrum of care settings and specialties including anesthesia, behavioral health, cardiology, dental, dermatology, dialysis, endoscopy, oncology, ophthalmology, radiology, transplant, urgent care, long-term care, home health, obstetrics, fertility, genomics, and surgery.

Service Coverage

  • Epic Systems operates primarily across the United States, where its system is deployed at over 3,620 U.S. hospitals and health systems as of mid-2025, representing approximately 43.7% of the acute-care hospital EHR market and covering roughly 66% of the U.S. population.
  • Internationally, Epic has been expanding into markets including Canada, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Austria, France, and Mauritius, securing seven new international contracts in 2024 alone, including a provincewide implementation in Newfoundland and Labrador covering 28 hospitals and full coverage across Singapore's public hospital system.

Partnerships

  • Epic's most significant technology partnership is with Microsoft, with whom it has an expanded collaboration integrating Azure OpenAI (GPT-4) into the EHR for AI-assisted clinical documentation and patient messaging, and whose Azure platform serves as the structural leader for Epic cloud deployments — particularly given that Epic's Cogito Cloud analytics platform runs on Azure and Microsoft Fabric, creating lower egress costs for Azure-hosted environments.
  • Epic also supports Amazon Web Services (AWS) as a major cloud hosting option, with AWS currently serving approximately 90% of Epic cloud customers by some estimates, and reinstated a Google Cloud infrastructure agreement in 2022.

Company Size & Ownership

  • Epic Systems was founded in 1979 by Judith Faulkner in Madison, Wisconsin (now headquartered in Verona, WI) and employs approximately 13,000–15,000 people as of 2025–2026, with workforce growing steadily at roughly 1.8% year-over-year.
  • Revenue reached $5.7 billion in 2024 (confirmed by an Epic spokesperson) and climbed to approximately $6.7 billion in 2025 — more than doubling in five years — driven by record hospital market share gains, including adding 176 facilities and 29,399 beds in 2024 alone.

Compliance & Certifications

  • Epic Systems is subject to and compliant with HIPAA and HITECH as a healthcare software vendor handling protected health information (PHI) at massive scale.
  • The platform holds ONC Health IT certification under the 2015 Cures Update and is FHIR R4/US Core compliant, meeting federal interoperability mandates under the 21st Century Cures Act; Epic Nexus, its own TEFCA-designated QHIN, launched in December 2023 and has connected 625+ hospitals to the national interoperability framework.

Fall 2026 brings a wave of large Epic go-lives at UPMC, Northwell, ChristianaCare and others

Becker's Hospital Review's September 10, 2026 roundup of the year's biggest EHR switches shows a busy fall. UPMC planned the second wave of its Epic conversion for October 3, consolidating nine EHRs and about 6 million patient records. ChristianaCare planned an Epic launch the same day, Freeman Health System scheduled an October 24 go-live, and Sarasota Memorial planned a roughly $160 million enterprisewide Epic go-live in October. Northwell Health's third wave, part of a $1.2 billion migration across 28 hospitals, was set for November. Earlier in the year, Adventist Health went live on Epic across 27 hospitals, HCA expanded Meditech Expanse, and the VA continued its Oracle Health rollout. These projects affect more than the hospitals themselves. Independent practices, labs, imaging centers, home health agencies and other partners that exchange data with these systems may see changes to referral workflows, portals, interfaces and how records are sent and received. The costs are real too: Becker's notes Kaleida Health's roughly $170 million Epic transition contributed to a quarterly operating deficit. If you work with a health system that is converting, ask its IT or outreach team now about the go-live date, which interfaces will change, whether you will need new portal credentials, and what downtime to expect. Make sure your own EHR vendor knows about the change so interfaces can be tested before cutover. Have a paper or manual fallback ready for the go-live window. For organizations planning their own switch, these timelines show that large conversions are typically done in phases over multiple years.
