VenSearch Intelligence

Ideal Customer

  • VMware's ideal customer post-Broadcom is the large enterprise — specifically organizations among the world's top 10,000 enterprises with deep, multi-product VMware footprints deploying vSphere, NSX, vSAN, and vRealize together.
  • Broadcom CEO Hock Tan has explicitly stated that VCF delivers the most value to this top-10,000 tier, and that VCF's value proposition is 'much less' for smaller companies.

Key Differentiators

  • VMware's primary differentiator is its entrenched dominance in enterprise compute virtualization — vSphere ESXi remains the baseline hypervisor in the vast majority of enterprise data centers, and VMware maintains over 35% share of the broader virtualization software market.
  • The integrated VCF stack (compute, storage, networking, management) delivered as a single private cloud platform is positioned by Broadcom as offering the scalability of public cloud with the control, security, and compliance of on-premises infrastructure — a combination analysts describe as unmatched in functionality among private cloud offerings.

Industries Served

  • VMware serves a broad cross-section of industries including financial services, government (federal, state, and local), healthcare (payers and providers), telecommunications, retail, manufacturing, energy, and education.
  • Its solutions page explicitly calls out dedicated vertical tracks for healthcare providers, healthcare payers, federal government, state and local government, financial services, retail, and communication service providers.

Service Coverage

  • VMware operates as a global technology vendor with business presence across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa.
  • VMware Cloud on AWS alone spans 25 global regions, including locations in Australia and Switzerland, reflecting the breadth of its worldwide infrastructure footprint.

Partnerships

  • VMware maintains strategic technology alliances with all three major hyperscalers — AWS (VMware Cloud on AWS), Microsoft Azure (Azure VMware Solution), and Google Cloud (Google Cloud VMware Engine) — enabling customers to run VMware workloads natively in public cloud environments with licensing portability.
  • In 2024, NVIDIA and VMware expanded their alliance to deliver NVIDIA AI Enterprise natively integrated into VMware Cloud Foundation, enabling private AI workloads on-premises.

Company Size & Ownership

  • VMware was founded on February 10, 1998 in Palo Alto, California by Diane Greene, Mendel Rosenblum, Scott Devine, Ellen Wang, and Edouard Bugnion — and was the first commercially successful company to virtualize the x86 architecture.
  • Prior to its acquisition, VMware employed approximately 38,300 people and reported annual revenue of approximately $13.4 billion in fiscal year 2023.

Compliance & Certifications

  • VMware holds ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 27017, and ISO 27018 certifications across its cloud services portfolio, including products like Tanzu Mission Control and Workspace ONE, attested through third-party audits.
  • VMware undergoes annual SOC 2 and SOC 3 audits for its cloud service offerings and offers HIPAA Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) to healthcare customers, backed by independent third-party examination.

Offerings

3 offerings

VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF)

Broadcom's bundled private cloud platform — combines vSphere (compute), vSAN (storage), NSX-T (networking), and Aria Suite (management) into a single subscription. Mandatory purchase for enterprise vSphere customers post-Broadcom acquisition. 3-10x price increase versus prior perpetual licensing driving Nutanix and Microsoft HCI migration conversations.

Software

VMware NSX-T (Network Virtualization)

Software-defined networking and microsegmentation — NSX-T creates virtualized networks independent of physical infrastructure, enabling zero-trust microsegmentation, east-west firewall policies, and consistent networking across on-premises and cloud. The primary enterprise network virtualization platform; competes with Cisco ACI.

Software

VMware vSphere

The dominant enterprise hypervisor — vSphere ESXi manages the physical compute layer; vCenter Server provides centralized management across clusters. Runs 70%+ of enterprise virtualized workloads. Post-Broadcom, sold as part of VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) subscription bundles. Still the baseline assumption in enterprise data center discussions despite customer migration accelerating.

Gartner: 55% of enterprises will test VMware alternatives by 2029, up from 25%

Gartner predicts that by 2029, 55% of enterprises will start proofs of concept for alternatives to their VMware deployments, up from 25% in 2026, The Register reported on September 22, 2026. The prediction appears in Gartner's Distributed Hybrid Infrastructure Magic Quadrant, where VMware is still rated a Leader alongside AWS, Nutanix, Microsoft and Oracle. In a separate, first-in-a-decade Server Virtualization Magic Quadrant, Gartner calls VMware the technical leader but says clients report that per-core subscriptions have caused significant cost increases with little room to negotiate. For businesses that run their own servers or private cloud, this confirms what many have seen at renewal: VMware remains capable, but cost and commercial practices are pushing buyers to at least look at alternatives. Gartner also flags drawbacks elsewhere, including complex Nutanix pricing, multiple management consoles for Microsoft, and limited enterprise application support for Proxmox. Before your next VMware renewal, document how many cores you license and what you actually use. Ask your provider or advisor to price at least one alternative, and to estimate the cost and risk of migrating, not just the license price. Gartner's own advice is that clients should carefully evaluate the ROI of potential migrations. The Register notes that many customers signed three-year subscriptions, making 2029 a natural point to reassess. Starting a small proof of concept well ahead of a renewal gives you real data and better leverage.

VMware vCenter flaw exploited five days after disclosure, with ransomware on ESXi hosts

Broadcom published an advisory on July 29, 2026 for CVE-2026-59310, a CVSS 9.8 directory traversal flaw in the vCenter Syslog server that lets an unauthenticated attacker with network access run code. Infosecurity Magazine reported on August 13 that German firm Quirso saw compromised systems contacting attacker infrastructure from August 3, and counted about 361 victim IP addresses across 47 countries, including 41 in the U.S. The Hacker News reported on August 17 that the suspected China-nexus actor also abused a related authentication bypass, CVE-2026-59309, created rogue admin accounts, harvested credentials and deployed Babuk-derived ransomware to ESXi hosts. CISA added CVE-2026-59310 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on August 18. vCenter controls an organization's virtual servers. An attacker with admin rights there can reach nearly every workload, and encrypting ESXi hosts takes many systems down at once. Quirso suspected the ransomware may have partly served to destroy logs and hide the intrusion. Confirm vCenter is on a fixed release: 9.1.0.0300, 9.0.2.0100, or 8.0 U3k or 8.0 U2f depending on your branch. Broadcom has not published a workaround. vCenter should never be reachable from the internet; ask your provider to verify that. Because patching does not evict an intruder, also check for unfamiliar accounts such as 'vcadmin' or 'adminuser,' unexpected members of the vSphere SSO Administrators group, odd cron jobs and unknown JSP files. If you host virtual servers with a provider, ask them directly whether they were affected and what they checked.

Broadcom narrows VMware cloud provider program; 11:11 Systems keeps buying ex-partners

Broadcom's multi-year overhaul of its VMware Cloud Service Provider (VCSP) program has removed many former partners, and a Broadcom executive told SDxCentral on April 28, 2026 that the next 12 months will be a "defining period" for the ecosystem. Ricky Cooper, Broadcom's vice president for CSP and OEM sales, said the program is now focused on partners that can support VMware Cloud Foundation 9 and private cloud, and acknowledged that not all customers are fully aware of the changes. Consolidation is under way: 11:11 Systems acquired Australia's Digital Sense earlier in 2026, its seventh purchase of a former VMware partner. Many businesses do not license VMware directly. They run on a hosting provider, private cloud or MSP that does. If that provider has been dropped from Broadcom's program or acquired, the pricing, contract terms and support model behind your servers may change, sometimes at renewal. Ask your hosting or private cloud provider plainly whether they remain an authorized VMware cloud partner, what tier they hold and how Broadcom's changes affect your price at renewal. If your provider was acquired, request the new owner's terms in writing. If you are concerned, use the next renewal window to price alternatives, including other VMware partners, public cloud or another hypervisor, so you have options. The same report cited a partner whose margin on VMware resale fell from 10 to 15 points to 5 to 6 points. Squeezed margins usually show up somewhere, so watch for changes in support levels as well as price.
