Ideal Customer

  • Zayo targets a wide enterprise spectrum — from mid-sized organizations with lean IT teams (who benefit from fully managed services like Managed Firewall, Managed SD-WAN, and SASE) to large multinational enterprises and carriers requiring high-capacity dark fiber, wavelengths, and IP transit.
  • The company has formally launched an 'AAA program' dedicating over 3,000 key mid-sized enterprise accounts exclusively to channel partners, signaling a deliberate push into the mid-market alongside its historical large-enterprise and carrier base.

Key Differentiators

  • Zayo positions itself as one of the world's largest independent Tier-1 fiber network operators — not a reseller — owning approximately 144,000 route miles and 18 million fiber miles, giving it infrastructure depth that most managed service competitors cannot match.
  • It brands itself as 'the anti-telco telco,' emphasizing customer service responsiveness and has won the Business Intelligence Group Excellence in Customer Service Award three consecutive years.

Industries Served

  • Zayo explicitly serves twelve verticals: Business & Professional Services, Carrier/Telecom, Data Centers, Education, Finance, Healthcare, Manufacturing, Media & Entertainment, Public Sector, Retail, Technology, and Transportation.
  • Its customer roster includes wireless and wireline carriers, social networking and web content companies, financial services firms, healthcare and research institutions, government agencies, and large enterprises.

Service Coverage

  • Zayo operates a global communications infrastructure network spanning 35 countries, with its strongest presence in North America and Western Europe.
  • Its fiber network covers approximately 144,000 route miles (long-haul and metro dark fiber) and roughly 18 million fiber miles, connecting over 51,000 on-net buildings and approximately 1,500 on-net data centers.

Partnerships

  • Zayo operates a formal channel program — the Zayo Partner Network — comprising master agents and sub-agents including Intelisys, Sandler Partners, AVANT, Telarus, Bridgepointe, AppDirect, E78, Inflect, and United Cable Company.
  • Key technology partnerships include Netskope (for SASE delivery, announced March 2024), Equinix (joint AI infrastructure architecture framework, September 2025), Microsoft, AWS, Google, Cloudflare, Ciena, CoreSite, and PacketFabric.

Company Size & Ownership

  • Zayo was founded in 2007 by Dan Caruso, John Scarano, and Matt Erickson and grew aggressively through over 30 acquisitions from 2007–2014, including AboveNet ($2.2B) and 360networks.
  • The company currently employs approximately 4,000–4,165 people (per Revelio Labs 2024 workforce data), with estimated annual revenue in the range of $2.6–$2.8 billion (last publicly reported revenue was $2.58B in fiscal 2019).

Compliance & Certifications

  • Zayo holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification (for Zayo Group UK Ltd./Zayo Europe, covering fiber and bandwidth connectivity services), SOC 1, SOC 2 (with a 2024 audit period of August–December 2024 reported), PCI-DSS, HIPAA, CCPA, and supports multi-factor authentication (MFA) across its environment.
  • Its trust portal (trust.zayo.com) publishes compliance documentation including SOC 2 executive summaries and ISO 27001 certificates.

Zayo closes $4.25B purchase of Crown Castle fiber, adding 40,000 on-net buildings

Zayo closed its $4.25 billion acquisition of Crown Castle's fiber solutions business on May 1, 2026, about a year after signing, Fierce Network reported. The deal adds about 90,000 route miles and 40,000 on-net enterprise locations, bringing Zayo's North American network to 224,000 route miles. Crown Castle's small cells business was sold separately to EQT's Active Core Infrastructure Fund and renamed Arium Networks; Zayo signed a long-term agreement to supply it fiber. Zayo also announced 8,000 new long-haul route miles backed by a new anchor tenant. Many businesses that bought dedicated internet, Ethernet or dark fiber from Crown Castle now have Zayo as their provider. Forty thousand on-net buildings is a meaningful footprint, and it changes the competitive picture in metro markets where Crown Castle and Zayo previously bid against each other for the same buildings. If you have Crown Castle circuits, confirm your account, billing and support contacts with Zayo, and check whether your contract's service levels, pricing and renewal terms carry over unchanged. If your building previously had both Crown Castle and Zayo as separate options, recognize that your on-net choices may have narrowed, and plan renewals accordingly. Ask for a diverse-path review if your primary and backup circuits now sit with the same owner. On the positive side, a larger on-net footprint can mean faster installs and more route options. Get current quotes from Zayo and at least one competing carrier before your next renewal so you know the market rate.
