8x8 launched 8x8 Small Business, a consumption-based unified communications offering for organizations with fewer than 100 users, UC Today reported on July 21, 2026. It is sold through direct resell partners and is available in the UK, the Republic of Ireland and Australia. The offering drops fixed seat counts and annual license commitments while using the same platform 8x8 sells to larger companies, including calling, meetings, chat, analytics, compliance tools, CRM integrations and Microsoft Teams Phone integration. 8x8 says partners can provision users in as little as five days.
The launch is not available in the U.S., but it reflects a broader shift worth watching. Gartner's latest UCaaS research projects AI and consumption-based UCaaS growing from 5% of overall spend in 2026 to 30% by 2029. For small businesses with seasonal staff or uneven call volume, paying for usage instead of a fixed seat count and a multi-year term can lower the cost of getting started and reduce paying for idle licenses.
Usage-based pricing is not automatically cheaper. If you are offered it, ask for a modeled bill based on your real call minutes and user counts, what the per-unit rates are, whether rates can change mid-term, and whether there is a monthly minimum or cap. Compare that to a traditional per-seat quote over the same period.
If you are a U.S. 8x8 customer, it is fair to ask your provider or advisor whether a similar commitment-free option is planned here, especially if you are approaching renewal.
