Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said on the company's second-quarter 2026 earnings call that Amazon Leo, its low-earth-orbit satellite network formerly called Project Kuiper, is nearing 400 satellites in orbit and expects initial commercial service before the end of 2026, DIGITIMES reported. In March, an Amazon Leo executive told Fierce Network the service would target 1 Gbps download and up to 400 Mbps upload, that Amazon had invested $10 billion in it, and that early coverage would favor northern and southern latitudes before expanding toward the equator.
For business buyers, a second LEO provider matters more than another speed claim. Today, most companies that want satellite internet have one practical choice. Amazon is pitching enterprise features, including private connections that link a customer's antenna directly to AWS or private data centers without crossing the public internet, and it has announced agreements with AT&T and JetBlue.
If you rely on satellite for primary or backup service, do not sign a long multi-year satellite commitment right now without an exit or price-review clause. Ask Amazon Leo resellers and partners for coverage dates for your specific locations, published business pricing, service-level terms and support model. If you run workloads in AWS, ask how the private networking option is priced and whether it can replace a VPN for remote sites.
Early service may not offer around-the-clock coverage everywhere, so treat initial availability as a pilot, not a replacement for a proven connection.
