Two of the largest telecom equipment vendors made significant structural changes to their enterprise wireless businesses within days of each other. On October 13, Nokia announced a definitive agreement to sell its Enterprise Campus Edge (ECE) business — its primary private wireless and industrial edge unit — to Munich-based private equity firm Aurelius for an undisclosed sum. Two days later, on October 15, Ericsson announced it would dissolve its Business Area Enterprise Wireless Solutions (BEWS) unit effective January 1, 2027, dispersing its private 5G and neutral-host portfolios into its mainstream Networks division.
Nokia's ECE business serves nearly 900 customers in manufacturing, mining, logistics, airports, ports, and power generation, and generates more than €170 million in annual revenue. The roughly 1,000 ECE employees are expected to transfer with the business, and the deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals. Ericsson's reorganization keeps its private 5G and neutral-host assets inside the company but under different management, while its Cradlepoint wireless WAN unit will remain a standalone business within its Americas organization. The head of the enterprise wireless unit, Åsa Tamsons, is set to leave the company in 2027.
Analyst firm Omdia described Ericsson's move as signaling a broader reassessment of the 5G campus network market. For enterprises currently running Nokia ECE or Ericsson private 5G networks, the practical near-term impact should be limited — both companies have stated their intent to continue supporting existing customers and portfolios. That said, organizations relying on either vendor for private wireless infrastructure may want to confirm with their account teams what support and roadmap commitments look like under the new structures, and to factor vendor stability into any near-term procurement decisions.
