Nokia, T-Mobile and Nvidia completed what the three companies describe as the world's first AI-RAN voice call on a live commercial network on October 21, 2026. AI-RAN — artificial intelligence-native radio access network — moves the intelligence that manages wireless signals from fixed, purpose-built chips to GPU-accelerated servers that can also run other computing workloads at the same cell site.
The call was made at a commercial cell site in Bellevue, Washington, over T-Mobile's live 5G Standalone production network using Nokia's Massive MIMO radio and 5G anyRAN software, running on server infrastructure built on Nvidia's Aerial RAN Computer platform. The site was connected to a commercial 5G core and a standard commercial smartphone — not a lab device. Nokia's stated long-term goal is to double spectral efficiency (that is, how much data a given slice of radio spectrum can carry), though that remains an objective and was not measured in the Bellevue call.
Nvidia separately confirmed that BT, Deutsche Telekom and Elisa have each announced AI-RAN pilots on live networks using the same Nokia and Nvidia platform, broadening the technology beyond a single carrier. T-Mobile also reported AI-RAN performance gains with its other radio vendor, Ericsson, in the same week.
For enterprise IT and facilities teams, this development is not an immediate action item — AI-RAN affects how carriers build and manage their networks, not how businesses connect to them today. However, organizations evaluating private 5G deployments or long-term wireless infrastructure contracts may want to watch how AI-RAN field trials progress, since the architecture's promise of higher capacity from existing spectrum could affect network quality and pricing over the next several years.
